Our Mission
To enhance the well-being of patients in our service area by assuring a reliable and economical supply of the safest possible blood, by providing innovative hemotherapy services, and by promoting research and education programs in transfusion medicine.
Our impact in the community in 2022
Blood products collected and transfused to patients in our local hospitals include: 92,081 Red Cells, 12,469 Platelets, and 4,178 Plasma products.

Job Roles at Hoxworth
Donor Services
Donor Services staff are the medical professionals in the field greeting donors, determining eligibility to donate, collecting blood products, and ensuring a top notch donor experience. We are the biggest department at Hoxworth, collecting more than 100,000 blood products per year. Career possibilities in this department include Blood Donor Recruiter, Donor Care Technician Level 1 and 2, Mobile Unit Assistant, and more.
Components Manufacturing
The Components Laboratory processes whole blood, red blood cell, and apheresis platelet donations which are further manufactured into separate blood components. The Components Laboratory also provides blood component long-term storage processing and product modification, as needed, to provide optimal component therapy and product availability to patients in the Tri-State area. Career possibilities in this department include Blood Bank Technician and Advanced Blood Bank Technician.
Quality Control Laboratory
The Quality Control Laboratory department is responsible for ensuring all required screening and supplemental testing is completed for approximately 95,000 allogeneic, autologous and apheresis donations collected at Hoxworth Blood Center. Immunohematology Reference Lab
Hoxworth Blood Center's Immunohematology Reference Laboratory (IRL) provides testing and consultation to assist hospitals in solving patients' red blood cell (RBC) serological problems. Career possibilities in this department include Clinical Lab Scientist 1, Clinical Lab Scientist 2, and more.
Research
The goal of the Research Division is to link basic research with clinical care, leading to improved methods that ensure the quality, safety and efficacy of the blood and hematopoietic cell supply. The research program has multiple components, including clinical research, basic biological research, and translational research. Career possibilities in this department include Post Doc Fellow.
Transplantation Immunology
The Transplantation Immunology Division (TID) at University of Cincinnati’s Hoxworth Blood Center is a state-of-the-art histocompatibility and immunogenetics testing laboratory. Career possibilities in this department include Clinical Lab Scientist 1.
Cellular Therapy Laboratory
The Cellular Therapy Laboratory provides comprehensive laboratory support for bone marrow and stem cell transplant patients at UC Health, CCHMC, Jewish Hospital, Good Samaritan Medical Center, and Akron Children's Hospital, as well as for the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). Career possibilities in this department include Cell Therapy Technologist 1.
Product Management
Product management is part of the laboratories team at Hoxworth. They are the face of Hoxworth for our customers and are staffed 24 hours a day seven days a week to support the hospitals blood product needs day and night. In addition to issuing blood products, they are responsible for managing the inventory, arranging importing and exporting of blood products, arranging couriers and FedEx shipments, and sometimes driving orders to hospitals in cases of emergencies. Career possibilities in this department include Inventory Control Specialist 2-9.
