John “Keith” Malloy Reaches Major Milestone at Hoxworth Blood Center

John Malloy, Hoxworth Blood Center Donor

John “Keith” Malloy celebrates a big milestone as he tallies his 100th blood or platelet donation at Hoxworth Blood Center. The Loveland native is a regular at the Neighborhood Donor Center in West Chester. As a matter of fact, he routinely donates platelets every two weeks.

For Malloy, this is something he started doing when he was in college in the 1980s.

I donate because I have it and I can. People need it!

Even when Malloy wasn’t living in the Cincinnati area, he found the local blood center and continued giving the gift of life. Now he’s made it his Hoxworth habit to donate platelets on a regular basis.

Erica Lovett at the Hoxworth Neighborhood Donor Center in West Chester says Malloy is a very kindhearted, selfless and dedicated donor. He has been a regular at this location for the past four years.

Like double red cells, a platelet donation is an automated procedure in which a machine collects platelets while returning the red cells and most of the plasma back to the donor.

Individuals who meet the requirements to donate whole blood can usually donate platelets, but in order to ensure safety, we must verify the platelet count of the donor.

A platelet donation does take more time. Individuals making a platelet donation should expect a 90 to 120 minute appointment. Most donors use this as a time to themselves to watch a movie or tv show or read a good book.

It’s easy! Platelets is time consuming. But it gives me an opportunity to read my book and so I just chill.

Platelets are very fragile, short-lived blood cells that are essential for normal blood clotting. They must be transfused within five days of donation. Hoxworth needs 50 platelet donors each day to meet the needs of our area hospitals.

Platelet donors will be eligible to donate again in 14 days. In fact, platelet donors can donate up to 24 times a year!

The staff at the Neighborhood Donor Center in West Chester celebrated Malloy with a sweet treat and a certificate marking this big occasion.

Hoxworth honors these selfless heroes who embody the mission of saving lives close to home. By continuing to make donating blood their #HoxworthHabit, they enable us to impact the lives of those most in need here in Greater Cincinnati.
