As Reco's memorial blood drive continues, Hoxworth gives an update on Reco's legacy, the success of the blood drive, and the continued need for unity in the Greater Cincinnati area.

Reco Gunnels Sr.'s Legacy lives on in those he left behind

"The family continues Reco's legacy and hope for God's peace in our broken communities," says Reco's sister, Kelly Gunnels Valines, "Hope for the loss and forgotten young boys and men. He will never be forgotten."

Kelly leans on her faith that her brother's tragic death will not go in vain. She continues to fight for justice today and hopes others will be motivated to join the cause.

"On this unpredictable journey, this battle called life, you better determine your Why and your purpose," Kelly continues, "Your Why is what forges you forward into your purpose, surrender and a grit to not quit. Your purpose is your source and your stability to stand even if your stance is resting on bent knees in the darkest and most humbling moments. Reco is my, Why and Jesus Christ is my purpose."

The blood drive is more than an event, it is an experience for both the participants and the attendees. Echoing Reco's words "Go Big or Go Home".

Reco Gunnels Sr., affectionately known as a gentle giant, left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His life was defined by a deep sense of community, organizing neighborhood cookouts and offering support to those affected by gun violence. Tragically, Reco himself became a victim of gun violence on August 24th, 2017. His loss was a profound blow to his family and the community, but out of this tragedy, the “Give for Peace” blood drive was born—a testament to his enduring spirit.

Reco's philosophy, "Go Big or Go Home," resonates throughout the event, transforming it into more than just a memorial. It is a vibrant celebration of the values Reco held dear and the impact he made during his time on Earth. The blood drive embodies his commitment to service, a trait he inherited from his late mother, Maxine Gunnels, and continues to inspire all who participate.

The annual blood drive is a unique blend of commemoration, education, and altruism. Over the past five years, it has become a way for Reco's loved ones to remember him and ensure that his legacy lives on. By fostering a culture of blood donation, the event saves lives in the greater Cincinnati community and serves as a beacon of hope and change.

"We hold onto hope to receive justice for our family and all who loved him," says Kelly Gunnels Valines, Reco's sister. “The blood drive serves as a symbol of that hope, as well as a way to give back to the community that Reco cared so deeply about.”

As we look forward to the next “Give for Peace” blood drive, we remember Reco Gunnels Sr. not just for the man he was, but for the love, service, and unity he inspired in others. His legacy shines brightly, reminding us all that a life well-lived continues to touch hearts and change lives long after it has passed.

This story can serve as a permanent fixture on your website, celebrating Reco Gunnels Sr.'s life and the positive impact the "Give for Peace" blood drive has on the community year after year.
