Elijah (Eli) Simpson was a remarkable young boy whose spirit continues to inspire even years after his passing in August 2021. His legacy lives on through an annual memorial blood drive in partnership with Hoxworth Blood Center, a tribute that reflects the impact he made during his all-too-short life.
Born on May 29, 2008, Eli was a child full of joy and compassion. He cherished his family, loved the outdoors, and found happiness in hiking and celebrating Christmas. Most importantly, he had a deep faith in Jesus that guided him through every challenge he faced, both in the best of times and during the most difficult moments.
At just 11 years old, in June 2019, Eli’s life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma—a rare and aggressive cancer. The disease started in his knee and quickly spread to his lungs. Eli underwent a complex and life-altering procedure called a rotationplasty, followed by two lung surgeries. Throughout his treatment at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, he bravely endured countless procedures, including blood transfusions provided by Hoxworth Blood Center.
Eli's resilience was evident during his journey. Over a 12-month period, he was fitted with two prosthetic legs, and his favorite was one adorned with Pikachu, which brought him so much joy. With it, he was able to walk and lead the largest team at the 5K hosted by Cincinnati Children’s "Be Well" Program. In those precious moments, Eli was cancer-free for five months, a period filled with hope.
However, in September 2020, Eli began experiencing pain in his other knee. A PET scan revealed the heartbreaking news: multiple tumors had spread throughout his body, including his bone marrow. Eli faced each day with courage, continuing his battle with unwavering faith until his peaceful passing in August 2021.
Eli and his family held firmly to their belief that "God is still good, God still loves, and that God still has a plan in all of this." They continue to honor Eli’s spirit through their faith and their ongoing mission to give back.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
In loving memory of Eli, his family created Team Eli and has hosted an annual blood drive to help save other lives, just as Eli’s was sustained by the generous blood donors at Hoxworth.
This year’s memorial blood drive will take place on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, from noon to 6 pm at the Goshen High School Community Room (6707 Goshen Rd., Goshen, Ohio, 45122).
To honor Eli’s legacy and make a difference, consider donating blood. Walk-ins are welcome, but scheduled appointments are preferred.
