From Giving to Receiving: A Life Transformed by Hoxworth Blood Donors

Jessica Howard with her partner

As a Hoxworth blood donor since 2017, Jessica Littrell's journey with blood donations came full circle, transforming her life in ways she could never have imagined. It all began in 2018 when her world was rocked by her sister and father's cancer diagnoses. Fueled by the desire to make a difference, Jessica organized her first blood drive with Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, aiming to help others in times of need.

Little did she know that fate had a twist in store for her own life. In September of 2020, tragedy struck when Jessica was involved in a serious motorcycle accident. The accident left her with life-threatening injuries that required urgent medical attention. As she was air-lifted to UC Medical Center, the gravity of her situation weighed heavily on everyone involved.

During those critical moments in the air and the subsequent surgeries, Jessica's life was sustained by the generous contributions of Hoxworth blood donors. Their selfless acts had come full circle, with Jessica now finding herself on the receiving end of the very thing she had once passionately encouraged others to do.

With the support of blood donations from Hoxworth donors, Jessica made a remarkable recovery. Her resilience and determination shone through as she fought her way back to health. Through countless hours of therapy and rehabilitation, Jessica's strength was bolstered by the knowledge that her community had rallied around her, proving the power of collective kindness.

Now, on the cusp of her Giveback Blood Drive, Jessica's appreciation for the importance of blood donation has deepened immeasurably. The event, which once held sentimental significance for her sister and father, now takes on an even greater purpose as a celebration of life, hope, and gratitude.

The impact of Jessica's journey has been far-reaching. Her story has inspired others to become regular blood donors and has brought newfound awareness to the crucial role blood donation plays in saving lives. Through her strength, resilience, and unwavering spirit, Jessica has become a beacon of hope for her community and a testament to the power of human compassion.

In a world often filled with uncertainties, Jessica's journey has proven that compassion and empathy can create a ripple effect, igniting a chain of goodness that transcends individual lives and unites a community to give back for something greater than themselves. And on this special day, as donors come together to celebrate Jessica and donate blood, they also celebrate the gift of life and the unbreakable bonds that tie us all together.

Jessica hosts two annual blood drives: Jessica’s Birthday Blood Drive held in April and Jessica’s Giveback Blood Drive in late summer.
